Last moment with Bel 260 - JAC1102A

   Today is our last class with Miss Zue.

SAD FACE....

I was just want to say thank you very much especially to our beloved lecturer Miss Zuraidah because had teaching since the beginning semester.  I also want to say thank you to all my friends for A class and H class because they had helping me..

WHAT WERE WE LEARNED??

Yesterday, we had pra-test on argumentative essay. The question was about parental negligence is the main causes of social problem to youngster. Do you agree or disagree??? each group consists of 4 team. My team member were amirah nadrah, fariesha, hazura and me. In this essay, we should include the introduction (including thesis statement), body paragraph. refutation and conclusion. Our group chose to disagree the statement.  From our point of view, we think that there are many other factors that are contributing more on social problem on youngster such as peer pressure, media factor and environmental factor.

We also learned about future tense that were present by amirah's group.

Future  tense were divided into 4 types which were

1. Simple future tense

     It is used when to make predictions, intentions and planed events.

     For example:

     a) The test next week is going to be really hard. (prediction)

      b)  I am going to be a rich person someday.  (intention)

       c)  I am going to Mexico in a few days. ( planed event)

2. Future perfect tense.

     The formula is: subject +  will + have + past pparticiple

      Example: I will have taken all of my exams a week from today.

3. Future continuous tense

     The formula is: subject + will + be + ing

     Example: The storm will be coming soon.

4. Future perfect continuouse tense.

     The formula is: subject + will + have + been + verb-ing

     Example: We will have been working here for 10 years in June.

INTERPRETING WRITERS' POINTS OF VIEW, ATTITUDES OR INTENTION

Today I had learned about what are the writers' ponits of view, attitudes, or intention when we are reading a text. There are a few example of tone words of the writer when we read the text such as bitter, cynical, compassionate, evasive, mocking, cylical and many more.

So, we had a mini game about what we had learned. Each group consists 5-6 person. Each group should guest who is the writer, the target audience, writer's tone, words/phrases used to convey his intention and writer's intention based on the advertisement, article and video clip.
My group members were dian, umi, hajar, syasya and ashraf. Our score was 8.5 and the highest was 9.0..
Eventhough, I lost again but I still have fun on it...^_^

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

Argumentative essay is the type of essay that we should agree or disagree about the topic that will ask. This essay is same with continuous essay but it have refutation before the conclusion.

In this essay, we should have:

·         Introduction – it should have the thesis statement. In this thesis statement, the writer should mention whether he/she agree or disagree about this topic.

·         Body paragraph – should have topic sentence 1,2,3

·         Conclusion paragraph – refutation and conclusion sentences.

Example introduction:

There has been much discussion about the use of nuclear power ever since the first reactor was built. People who support nuclear power think that it provides a cheap and effective means of supplying energy needs. However, in reality it is not cheap at all and the dangers are well-known especially after the accident at the nuclear reactors in Japan after the tsunami struck. The fact is that nuclear power is a tried, tested and failed technology. Because of its cost, risk and less safety precautions, the building of nuclear reactors should not be continued.

v  In this paragraph, green represent thesis statement. The type for this introductory paragraph is the contrast to the thesis statement.

Example refutation:

Some people might claim that there is no real alternative to a new generation of nuclear reactors. However, combined heat and power units, which generate electricity, are already economical for large houses or blocks of flats and smaller units will be on the market next year. Local generation of electricity eliminates the enormous losses of wasted heat in electricity generation by fossil fuels or nuclear reactors. Wind turbines and solar cells on the roof can also provide home solutions and will become more economical as costs come down with mass production.

·         Red- represent refutation sentence

·         Black – represent conclusion sentences

ESSAY again.....



Today our class have presentation on continuous essay. My group was presented on topic for Disadvantages on Alcohol.  However, only one group which was Nadirah’s group had presented the essay based on what Miss Zue wanted from us. Most of us do not have correct topic sentence and controlling idea for each paragraph. At that time, Miss Zue was very angry and mad with us. I was really scared…

            As the conclusion, to write the best essay it should have:

·         Introduction – contain the hook, transition and the thesis statement.

·         Body paragraph – each paragraph must have topic sentence (topic and controlling idea), supporting sentence 1, supporting sentence 2, supporting sentence 3, concluding sentence and unity.

·         Conclusion – based on prediction, quotation, or recommendation.

This is example for the best continuous witting essay that had written by Nadirah, Aisyah, Liyana, Mel and Shana.

Ways to reduce poverty among poor people

         “I am tired of being poor, this is humiliating.” A young girl said to herself. She never asked for this poverty fate. She was born in a poor family. She could not own anything that other teens have. I am that young girl. This poverty stopped many people from achieve their dreams. Apart from that, many of  these unfortunate teens do not know that they can seek help to improve their life. This poverty can be improved by government giving help through their children’s education, economy welfare and motivation as a self-improvement.       

          One of the ways for government to reduce poverty among poor people is by giving their children’s education. As we know, education is an essential towards bright future so by giving them the opportunity to learn, they will be able to improve their life. For example, the government provides free text books and school needs to reduce their parent’s burden instead of buying those things. Other than that, the government also provides scholarship to those poor university students. Scholarship makes student’s life easier as a large amount of money need to be invested in education nowadays. Hence, the rate of poverty among poor people can be decreased through education.

          Besides that, government also take care of poor people through their economy welfare by giving them the jobs opportunity and donations. Usually, jobs opportunity is given based on their education level in order to increase their family’s income rate. However, in order to help the poors, the government also contributes donations such as money, food, and clothes. These necessary things help them to reduce their burden to live their life. Thus, economy welfare is one of the major steps to be taken by government to reduce the poverty among poor people.

              Last but not least, poverty can be improved by giving motivation as a self-improvement. The government can conduct a motivation that can change people’s perception towards poverty. This motivation contains activities that improved their poverty life such as involve in agriculture business. Apart from that, the government can help by giving them some additional capital to start their own business. Besides that, teenagers should not think that they are troubling their parents by going to school and asking for educational money. Instead, those teenagers should realize that only education can improve their life better. Therefore, we must use wisely all the contribution that has been made by the government and no matter what, we must set in our mind that this life can be change if we have some effort.

          As a conclusion, poverty can be improved in a lot of ways and they should not give up in order to achieve their own dreams. Our society can live much better than yesterday if they know how to use the benefits that had been given from thegovernment. Government should play an important role to curb this poverty issues among our community. Not just that, we should not underestimate and categorize people based on their ways of life. Instead, we should think ahead in order to change our life’s fate.

GRAMMAR TIME ^_^

Today it’s our group turn to present the topic on Simple Past Tense.

This chapter contains 4 sub topics which are:

1.    Past tense

2.    Past continuous

3.    Past perfect

4.    Past perfect continuous

1.    Past tense

Past tense is used to

a)    Describe an action or an event which occurred at a specific time in the past

b)    Report past events or situations in newspapers, reports and magazines.

c)    Refer to an action which took place regularly in the past.

Example: Pak Abu went to the hospital yesterday.

2.    Past continuous

a)    The Past Continuous tense is used to express continuous actions which took place in the past.

Example : He was traveling in Europe last summer

b)    The Past Continuous tense is frequently used to refer to an ongoing action which was taking place when something else occurred in the past.

Example: We were entertaining friends when the parcel arrived.

To form past continuous:

Subject + was/were + verb-ing

3.    Past perfect tense

To form past participle:

Had + past participle

Example: had learned

4.    Past perfect continuous

To form past perfect continuous:

Subject + had + been + base + ing

Example: I had been working



YAYA FALL IN LOVE????

Fall in love  

 Most of the topic that I had learn in bel, passive and active voice had make me fall in love with it. This because the topic was very attractive and me enjoyed to learn it. This topic also had make me to think creatively in smartly..

PASSIVE AND ACTIVE VOICE

 Active voice– indicates that the subject of the verb is acting.

This example shows the subject is doing the verb.

Example

a)    The teacher gave an assignment

            The teacher (subject) is doing the giving (verb)

Passive voice-the subject becomes the passive recipient of the action.

It’s mean that the subject is being acted.

Example:

a)    The president was cheered by the congressmen.

            The president (subject) was being cheered (verb)

So, the conclusion are when in

i)             Active voice

Subject (forward) + verb + object (backward)

ii)            Passive voice

Object (forward) + verb + subject (backward)

           

GRAMMAR TIME ^_^

Today Diana’s group had present about Present Tense. Present tense was divided into 4 types. There are:

a)    Present Simple Tense

Example: plays, eats (singular form)

                 Play, eat (plural form)

b)    Present continuous tense

·         Singular form: is+verb+”ing”

            Example: Mira is playing badminton.

·         Plural form: are+verb+”ing”

            Example: They are eating mee curry together at mamak’s stall.

c)    Present perfect tense

Has/have + past participle.

d)    Present perfect continuous tenses

Has/have been+ verb +”ing”

Diana was explaining about the simple past tense

EXPERIENCE ON SPEAKING TEST

Today, I had speaking test…. My team members are fariesha, amirah nadrah and zura. We got question on ecosystem. I was the first candidates and my point was agriculture activity.

I’m very nervous at that time. Miss zue faces also changed. Her face was serious at that time..

Before we end the discussion, I had make the biggest mistake. Accidently, I said that I totally disagree with my opinion. Huaaaa… but I glad that miss zue had give me the second chance to make the conclusion…

What I had learn from this test were

1.    Always improve our knowledge by reading newspaper and update about current issue

2.    Stay calm and talk with confident and the explanation must relevant with the point..

3.    Understand the question first.

Speaking test for Bel 260

1.    Each candidate will be divided into 4 team members. Each group will have to do the individual and group discussion on what the topic that given to them.

2.    In individual task or known as task A the candidates will be given 2 minutes for the preparation and another 2 minutes for present on what idea that has been given.

3.    After the 1st candidate finish present his/her point, then continue with 2nd candidate.

4.    During this task, no interruption occurs and when the candidate presents the point other person should write down the point that was presented. So, you can use the point in task B to agree or oppose it.

5.    In task B, the group will be given 2 minutes to prepare and another 8 minutes to do the speaking in group. The topic that is used in task a is same with task b. The candidate can choose any point that he/she fill comfortable to present. The point is not fixed at all. Not like in task A.

TIPS AND SUGGESTION IN SPEAKING TEST…

1.    Before test, read all about current issue because in Bel 260 it will ask more about current issue not like Bel 120 it’s more about students, teenagers and parents.

2.    In individual task use more transition element to connect or adding points.

3.    Speak smoothly, clearly and slowly so that it can increase the time to finish.

4.    In task B, the more marks will be given for those who can agree, oppose or interrupt the idea that present by other team members with the proper way. For example,

a)    To interrupt = excuse me, may I interrupt? , Sorry to interrupt, by I also have my opinion to say….

b)    To agree= I absolutely agree with your opinion, I agree with that but for me….,

c)    To oppose = I totally disagree with your opinion, I not really agree what have you said just now because in my observation……

d)    Reduce the words like urmmm, aaaaaahh, because it will reduce the marks.

e)    Always try to help the members who silent and don’t know who to elaborate the point. For example:

i)             What do you think about the point?

ii)            Did you mean ……. just now?

iii)           Can you explain more about…..

How the marks will be given??

            The marks will be given on task fulfilment, language and communication ability.
